Carpet beetles are tiny round beetles, often with a pattern of white, brown and yellow scales on their backs. The adults feed on pollen outdoors, but they lay eggs indoors, and the larvae are what cause the damage. These small, hairy larvae eat wool, silk, fur, feathers and the lint and pet hair that collects under furniture and along carpet edges.
In the Western Suburbs, people usually call us after finding bare patches in a wool rug, holes in a jumper, or small shed skins along the skirting boards. Older homes with wool carpets and cupboards full of stored clothes are more prone to them, but new homes can get them too, often from an old rug, a box of winter clothes or a piece of second-hand furniture.

Empty wardrobes that show damage, and wash or dry-clean affected clothes. Take the vacuum bag or canister contents straight out to the bin once you are done so the larvae do not crawl back in.
